History has been made with the erection of the first ASC (Automated Stacking Crane) on Khalifa Port. It was erected with the help of a mobile 1,200 ton crane.
It is one of the 13 ASC cranes whose parts were delivered earlier this month. On September 1st, the FM Prosperity delivered parts for 7 ASC cranes made in Poland. The ship arrived from India. And the MV Sabrina Scan delivered, on September 8th, exactly a week later, parts for 6 ASC cranes, made in Montenegro. Both batches are Konecranes orders.
In addition, in January 2012, the Shanghai-based company ZPMC (Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd) is shipping us six Super Post Panamax Ship to Shore Container Cranes for Khalifa Port. The STS cranes that will be supplied by ZPMC are designed with a single hoist and a rated load of 110 tonnes that will support tandem lift (2 x 40’) operations in the future.
ADPC has installed ladders and platforms on the ground with fibre optic cabling. The cranes will be assembled and tested with power coming, as planned, from mobile generators, initially. The generators will supply 11KV of electricity.
Each crane will take up to 8 hours to assemble – first one leg, then the other, then the double girder, then the trolley (the horizontal moving part).
Full testing of the cranes will take place in the middle of October. Joost Achterkamp, Terminal Area Project Manager, says: “Connecting the full permanent power to the cranes will be very exciting and we are keen to test the cranes. We are aiming for the first crane movement in the middle of October. We’re confident as well as extremely busy.”
