ADPC runs truck driver safety campaign at Abu Dhabi ports

“BE AWARE & DRIVE WITH CARE” TAKES PLACE FROM 6 – 8 MAY

Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) will be running its second annual truck drivers safety campaign from 6 – 8 May at Abu Dhabi ports.

The campaign to promote safer driving “Be aware & drive with care” is organized in partnership with the Abu Dhabi (AD) Police, the Emirates Driving Company (EDC) and the Department of Transport (DoT) and follows last year’s successful campaign which reached more than 2000 truck drivers and transport managers across the region.

This year’s program includes free safety inspections of all trucks entering Abu Dhabi Ports and a workshop addressed at transport managers informing them about “Fleet Management and Safety Guidelines”.

The program includes a series of new induction movies which focus on managing risk across the whole port area, which have been developed by ADPC, and “Safe Driving” presentations held by the AD Police and EDC in English, Urdu, Pashtu and Arabic.

Furthermore, all the participants will have the opportunity to experience what it feels like to drive a truck through Khalifa Port on ADPC’s state-of-the-art driving simulator. In addition, ADPC’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department will be giving helpful tips related to road safety.

“Ports and industrial zones are high risk work environments. As a master developer of ports and industrial zones, it is our responsibility to make sure people visiting our sites are aware of all of the safety hazards and risks – the safety of all of our staff and our customers is our top priority. We want everyone who comes to work in the morning to go home safely to their family in the evening”, says Sultan Al Jaberi, Vice President (VP) – Regulations, HSE and Security.

More than 700 trucks enter the ports in Abu Dhabi every day. Some of them carry heavy lift cargo and some have to follow complex loading and unloading procedures, all of which increases the risk for drivers picking up or dropping off freight in and around the ports.

“Around 90% of all incidents happen because of simple human error. That’s why campaigns like this are so important, to constantly raise awareness and to train ourselves and others to reduce the probability of traffic incidents”, Al Jaberi explains.
