Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) awards Two Major Earthworks Contracts for Khalifa Industrial Zone worth a total of 1 AED billion

Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) awarded two major earthworks contracts for the Khalifa Industrial Zone in Taweelah. The contracts, which together involve more than 40 million cubic meters of landfill and a total cost of AED 1 billion, have been awarded to two prominent contractors, Al Jaber Transport & General Contracting LLC and Ghantoot Transport & General Contracting Establishment. The awards of these contracts mark the start of the construction activities in Area A of Khalifa Industrial Zone, which reflects 53 square kilometers of the total 137 square kilometers of Khalifa Industrial Zone.

The scope of works requires the contractors to clear and grub approximately 19 square kilometres of land area within the Khalifa Industrial Zone and then fill, spread and compact the area to a new raised level of +2.5m MSL. The two contracts which require approximately 300 trucks will be moving over 1.2 million cubic meters of fill per month (which equates to 1500 truck movements per day) from an ADPC borrow area on the east of Sheikh Rashid Highway to the Taweelah industrial area. The works will be completed in 36 months and will progressively release levelled areas for phased development.

Strategically located between the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai in Taweelah, Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone (KPIZ) is a multi-billion dollar project designed as a multi-purpose facility that involves the construction of a world-scale container and industrial port in addition to the development of over 100 square kilometers of industrial, logistics, commercial, educational, and residential special economic and free zones.

The dredging and reclamation at the site of the Khalifa Port started on February 17th and consists of dredging 45 million cubic meters as well as reclamation of the offshore port island which will cover a 275 hectare area. The port will be completed in phases and the first vessel is expected to visit Khalifa Port by the end of 2010.

For Immediate Release KPIZ is a central plank of “Plan Abu Dhabi 2030”, and will play a major role in Abu Dhabi’s industrial and economic diversification in serving as a key hub for large scale industrial investments that will be serviced by a state-of-the-art port, transport and other infrastructure facilities and services.
