Leading the region in providing high-tech marine and port training
Abu Dhabi Ports' Maritime Training Centre is located within Musaffah Port (see to map).
The training centre is equipped with a Ship Manoeuvring Simulator, a VTS simulator and a computer laboratory, with associated classrooms and conference rooms. The simulators have been programmed with local ports such as Musaffah and Khalifa for pilot and Master training, plus non-specific ports, to allow training in unfamiliar settings. A range of vessels are available for each simulator ranging from high speed pilot and crew boats to the world’s largest container vessels. VTS training follows the IALA model training courses.
There are current training programs which allow Masters of smaller vessels to become familiar with the navigation of the new channel under a variety of weather and tidal conditions before taking their vessel into the channel. This course also carries credits for pilotage exemption certificate applicants, who can reduce the required tripping with a pilot. Abu Dhabi Ports' Pilots also use the ship simulator to verify the handling of large vessels, with and without tug assistance, before they arrive in Khalifa port. The centre has recently developed training programs for the operators of high speed craft and teaches navigational techniques appropriate to such craft.
The first human factors training mandated under the STCW Convention, Manila Amendments, was held in the spring of 2013. The centre caters to internal and external trainees and further expansion into security training is underway with PFSO, Guarding and security awareness training available.
